It has been 75 turns since the discovery of AIVAS. Dragonrider influence, controlled for decades by the Treaty of the Ninth Interval, diminishes further with each passing turn. Only the riders of the Weyrwatch, unencumbered by political treaties or the need for tithes, enjoy any of the supremacy that the Weyrs once enjoyed. But even that is changing. Whispers of corruption and assassination, of illegal use of a black market drug to make dragons into living weapons, plague the Watch’s every move.
Defiant Weyrhold, established by riders whose mental connections to their dragons have been severed, stands in open opposition to the Weyrwatch’s corruption. But Defiant is not without its difficulties. A rash of kidnapped Hear-Alls and the death of the dragon of Igen Weyrleader’s weyrmate have brought Defiant into the public eye for the first time since its establishment seven turns past. To make matters worse, Bronzerider M’nes has formally seized control of the Weyr through his influence on its young Weyrwoman. His goal is simple: leverage Igen’s power to crush Defiant into the ground.
